Leadership Opportunities and Programs

From our counselor Mrs. Wolfe:

1. Bank of America Student Leaders Program - This is a highly selective all-expense paid program, including a week-long trip to Washington D.C. for a leadership summit. I have tapped a few juniors on the shoulder to apply who I think would be a good fit but it is open to all juniors and seniors who have strong leadership skills. CLICK HERE FOR FLYER

2. NYLF is a Summer Leadership Forum that has a price tag tied to it but could be a great experience for those that can afford it. All grade levels are welcome. CLICK HERE FOR FLYER

Largo LEAP 4 College Center

Largo High School is working with LEAP Tampa Bay (http://www.leaptampabay.org/) to create a new program called the LEAP 4 College Center. This will be a college and career resource center for Largo scholars to explore what they might want to do after they graduate. It will be housed in the Student Activity Center and staffed by trained parent volunteers who will meet 1:1 with students.

Here are some examples of some of the ways LEAP 4 College volunteers help students:
  • Exploration of college and career opportunities
  • Discussion about financial aid, scholarships, and FAFSA
  • Registration for College Board, Khan Academy, Bright Futures, ACT, Raise.Me, and NCA
  • Help with applications, recommendations, college visits, and college fairs
  • Coordination of special events, such as FAFSA Workshops and College Decision Day
  • Assistance with meetings with representatives from colleges, technical schools, and military branches
The LEAP 4 College Center is modeled after a similar program at Robinson High School and have won several awards for parent involvement and helped more than a thousand students over the years. The LEAP 4 College Center at Largo will start off small, but we have big plans to make a difference in the lives of Largo students!!

Interested in volunteering? Contact Anne Eason at anneason@aol.com or Chuck Tiernan, Director of LEAP Tampa Bay at ctiernan@cftampabay.org for more information. Caiti Wolfe, Largo IB Counselor is also a great resource if you need questions answered.

Class of 2020 Pinning Ceremony

Sixty students from the Junior Class of 2020 were formally inducted into the Largo High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme on October 18th during their Pinning Ceremony.

Dr. Bradley Finkbiner, Principal, welcomed the students for this landmark event. Kristine Slayton, EE Coordinator, Language Art and Inquiry Skills teacher, announced the students' names as they walked across the stage to accept their pins and certificates from Alec Liem, IB Coordinator, and Caitlin Wolfe, IB Guidance. A picture slide show was presented by Christy Wolfe, CAS Coordinator and Media Specialist.

Kym Rivellini, Largo IB Partners President, concluded the night with a message, "You could have gone to other high schools and taken other programs, but you chose the hardest one that's going to take the most work. From here on out it's going to get tough, but you're in it and you're going to get to the finish line."

The Pinning Ceremony and refreshments were sponsored by the Largo IB Partners and photography was provided by Winchester Dermody, Largo IB Partners 11th Grade Parent Rep.

IB Shadowing 2018

Do you want to shadow a Largo IB student for the day?

Current 8th grade students that are interested in learning more about Largo High School's International Baccalaureate Programme can schedule a day to come and shadow a 9th grade IB Ambassador. They will attend a full day of classes with their IB Ambassador and will also be introduced to different IB teachers and staff members. We also try to pair prospective students with an Ambassador who is taking electives they may be interested in taking.

Dartmouth Visits Largo and Tampa

Dartmouth Campus

Dartmouth Logo
Can’t make it to Hanover? No problem, Dartmouth is coming to Largo HS to visit students on November 1st. Parents and students can also attend the Tampa session on October 30th.
RSVP today for my visit to Tampa to be introduced to a few of the qualities that define Dartmouth:
  • One Dartmouth, which blends the faculty scholarship and institutional resources of a major research university with the undergraduate focus of a small college.
  • A devotion to the full depth and breadth of the liberal arts that empowers students to bring an interdisciplinary approach to their chosen areas of academic focus.
  • A community unlike any other: where teachers become mentors and friends, friends become family, and the town of Hanover feels like home, no matter where you’re from.
I’ll also answer any questions you have about admissions and financial aid. I hope to see you there!

All my best,

Daniel Dickey
Senior Assistant Director of Admissions
