Kaplan Test Prep for ACT

Kaplan is sponsoring a free ACT practice test at the Largo Library on January 10, 2015. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn what to expect when they sit for the ACT as juniors and seniors. The students will get a complete analysis of their results and learn exclusive strategies to improve their score. Many of our students took advantage of Kaplan's free SAT practice test this past month.

Seats are limited. To sign up please click here.  Students should bring two number 2 pencils and a calculator. Parents and students will receive test results via email within two weeks of taking the test.

General Meeting

Our next IB Booster General Meeting will be Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 6:30 pm. in the school cafeteria. All parents and students are welcome to attend. An Open Forum will be at the latter part of the meeting for questions, suggestions, etc.

Important Dates - November/December 2014

November 1 - January 31st - Bank of America Charitable Foundation Leaders Program Application Period - Since its inception in 2005, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,000 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities. There are two ways to be involved: 

  • A summer eight-week paid internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization. 
  • A week-long, all-expense paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 12-17, 2015. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.  Learn more here

November 4, 2014 - Largo IB Booster Board Meeting

November 13, 2014 - South County Information Fair - 6:00 - 8:00 pm. - Gibbs High School - Parents and students will have an opportunity to speak with representatives from all schools regarding application programs.

November 15, 2014 - Pinellas County Information Day - 9:00 am. - 12:00 pm. - Pinellas Park High School - Parents and students will have an opportunity to speak with representatives from all schools regarding application programs. Largo High IB Boosters will have students and parents on hand to answer questions.

November 19, 2014 - Great American Teach-in Day - If anyone is interested in participating within the IB program, please contact Mr. Lane at lanea@pcsb.org.

November 19, 2014 - Yale 's Young Global Scholars Program Webinar- 7:00 am./1:00 pm./7:00 pm. Learn about this program through a live information session. Space is limited. Register Here

December 4, 2014 - Discover Night - 6:00 - 8:00 pm. - Largo High School Cafeteria - This is a night for 8th grade parents and students to learn about Largo's International Baccalaureate Program. The evening will include a welcome and then a ten minute session in each classroom with teachers. IB Boosters will have students and parents on hand to answer questions.

  • October 4, 2014 - College Interview Bootcamp - 10:00 am - 12:00 pm - Courtyard Tampa Airport/Westshore - 3805 W. Cypress Street, Tampa - Bob LeVine, former chairman of the Harvard Schools Committee for Tampa Bay, will be conducting a bootcamp on how to master the interview process for college admission. Space is limited. Please RSVP at Seminars@SelectiveCC.com. Cost is $50 per student/$25 for parents
  • October 6, 2014 - North Pinellas County College & Career Fair - 6 pm. at Countryside High School 
  • October 7, 2014 - Pinellas County Financial Aid Seminar - 6:30 - 8:00 pm. at Pinellas Park High School - This workshop for Largo High School and Pinellas Park High School students and parents will educate on topics pertaining to the next step toward college. Topics include Bright Futures, Government Grants and Loans, Financial Aid, and Scholarships.
  • October 9th - IB Pinning Ceremony - Crossroads Christian Church - This ceremony is for those juniors who have committed to entering the IB program.
  • October 14th - Duke University Admission Seminar - 7:00 pm - Tampa Marriott Westshore - Register at here.
  • October 23 - 31 - The University of West Florida Honors College is offering The Pace Honors Scholarship that will cover tuition, dorm expenses and extra funding for off campus educational experiences. To qualify, please see Ms. Mitchell.

Important Dates - September

  • September 9, 2014 - IB Booster General Meeting 6:30 at Largo HS Cafe - This is the first general meeting of the IB Booster Membership. It is open to all parents and students in the Honors Option and IB programs. There will be an Open Forum at the end of the meeting to ask question.
  • September 11, 2014 - "Get to Know MIT" - 7:30 pm at Berkeley Preparatory in Tampa - This is an information session designed to learn about Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • September 17, 2014 - Senior College Information Seminar - 6:00 pm at Largo High School Cafe  -  All seniors must attend this evening as registration for the IB exams will take place this evening as well.
  • September 28, 2014 - Pinellas County College Fair - 1:00 - 3:00 pm at USF St. Petersburg campus - This is a meet and greet with admission professionals from over 70 universities from around the nation.

2014-2015 Start of School

We hope everyone had a great summer, but the school year is fast approaching. The first day of school is Monday, August 18, 2014. Remember that the school is under construction so expect the first week of school to be a learning experience as everyone works to adjust to new schedules, new teachers, and portable classrooms. Below are dates and information pertaining to the upcoming school year:

Dates:

  • August 7th - Bus Information - The county will mail out the postcards with your student's bus number and bus schedule. These cards are white and the size of a postcard so look before tossing.
  • August 12-13 - Parking Tags - The school will be selling parking spaces from 8:00 - 11:30 a.m. for $5.00. A valid driver's license is required. No reserved spots.
  • August 13th - Freshman Orientation - 6:00 - 7:30 pm. in the E wing building (Formerly the Excel building and now the offices) - This informal meeting is for incoming freshman and parents. Students will receive their school schedule, a campus map, and any other information. School locks will be available for purchase ($5). IB Booster memberships ($25) and IB T'shirts ($15) will also be for sale. Checks and cash only.
  • August 25th - Back to School Night - This is an evening for parents to walk their student's schedule, learn their classes, and meet their teachers. TBA
  • September 9th - IB Booster General Meeting - 6:30 p.m. in the E Wing Cafeteria - The first general meeting of the IB membership is open to all parents and students in the Honors Option and IB program. There will be an Open Forum at the end of the meeting to ask questions.
  • September 24th - Senior Exam Meeting - 6:30 p.m. in E Wing Cafeteria - This meeting is for all seniors and parents to discuss the upcoming IB exams. This is a mandatory meeting as forms must be signed.
  • October 8th - IB Pinning Ceremony - TBA - This ceremony is for those juniors who have committed to entering the IB program.
Information:
  • Pick up / Drop off - The entrance and exit will be off of Missouri Avenue. Cars will enter this area and turn right to circle around what was previously the teacher's parking lot. A map of the school can be found on the Largo High School Website.
  • New IB Teachers - Four new teachers were added to the curriculum. Please welcome Martine Samson who will teach 9th - 12th grade IB French; India Johnson who will be teaching Social Studies to HL/SL seniors; Christina Lucas who will teach HO Biology and HL/SL Biology; and Gloria Hermann who will teach HL/SL Spanish.
