Weekend Update from Assistant Principal Jonathan Marina

Good evening Largo High Family. This is assistant principal Jonathan Marina. Welcome to another installment of the weekend update.

Graduating scholars, Friday May 7th from 7pm to midnight, there will be a Grad Nite at Busch Gardens. Tickets will be on sale for $89 starting Monday, April 5th – Friday, April 23rd.  Please check the front page of the Largo High website for the link to pay online and the permission slip.  Scholars may also pay in person with Mrs. Shields in building 2 room 110 from 1:30– 2pm.

April 22nd there will be a graduation assembly and cap and gown pick up first through third period.  Please check the senior page on the Largo website for more information.

Mark your calendars!!!  Friday, May 28th from 7:30 – 10p there will be a senior banquet held in the Largo High courtyard.  Look out for more information shortly.

Please remember that school starts promptly at 7:25 A.M.  This includes MyPCS scholars as well.

Parents and guardians, please help us by ensuring your child leaves your home in the morning in dress code and with a mask.  We are pushing our scholars to make it to all classes on time.  After the five-minute tardy mark, we will be sending late scholars to the cafeteria.  They will have online access to the class they were extremely tardy for that period.  Help us to build your young person’s good habits of timeliness. I have attached posters that we have posted about this renewed drive in the email version of this message.

I also want to remind you that we are a closed campus.  Scholars that leave campus during the day pass by several signs that let them know they will receive two days of ABS, Alternative Bell Schedule, from 1:30 to 6:30 pm.  Please remind your scholar to weigh this out before leaving campus.

On Tuesday our softball team takes on Northeast here at home.  The game starts at 7 pm. Thursday we have flag football at home and Friday baseball is here as well. Both games are against Clearwater and start at 7 pm.

As always, thank you for taking the time to listen. We are on a mission. The mission is graduation. Don’t forget the mission.

Letter from Dr Finkbiner Regarding IB Exams

 Good morning.

Please see the update that Dr. Finkbiner has received regarding IB exams from Ms. Vigue  - - who is the Director of Advanced Studies.

She has been receiving multiple communications from parents and scholars:

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding IB Exam administration in Pinellas County Schools.  It has undoubtedly been a challenging year and I certainly understand your frustration and angst regarding the upcoming exams.  However, to clarify, Pinellas County Schools did not have the option to choose whether to continue with exams or cancel them.  The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) made that determination for every district. Our district was informed by the IBO Regional World School Manager that all schools in Pinellas County have been designated to administer the IB exams for the May 2021 session.  The IBO has also informed us that they have adjusted some exams this year to account for the disruption in learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are doing our best to ensure that our students' and staff's safety and well-being are considered in this undertaking, including staggering the exam times to provide for smaller groupings, sanitizing the exam room between use, and holding many of the exams off-site to prohibit the need to co mingle with the rest of the student body.  Your IB Coordinator also shared the FAQs IBO shared with us in a letter he/she sent to families recently, as I am sure you are aware I have attached those FAQ’s in the chance that you may have missed it.

I know this is not the response you are hoping to hear, but I do want you to know that we value your feedback, will share it with IBO, and we sincerely care about your well-being.  I am confident your IB Coordinator would welcome meeting with you to address your specific concerns to the greatest extent possible and to answer any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Judith Vigue

Director, Advanced Studies & Academic Excellence

Pinellas County Schools

There is a meeting on April 6th with all seniors to go over the exam procedures. Ms. Wolfe will be leading the meeting, and Mr. Liem will check in virtually as well.

We will do our very best to answer as many questions and concerns as we can.

Thank you

Dr. Finkbiner
