FEMA Now Accepting Youth Preparedness Council Applications Do you know a young leader who is passionate about making a positive impact on their community? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for students in grades 8 through 11 interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities to join the Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). During their two-year terms on the council, members will take on projects at both a local and national level and develop their leadership and project management skills.   Why Is It Important for Youth to Apply? The youth of today are integral to building prepared communities of the future. By applying to and joining the YPC, youth will have the opportunity to become influential change agents in their community.” “FEMA is committed to actively involving youth in preparedness-related activities through the YPC. Weekend Update with Assistant Principal Jonathan Marina

Seniors, please pay your grad fees by March 12, 2021 and order your cap and gown through Herff Jones by March 1, 2021.  Information can be found on the Largo High website on the seniors’ page.

Any 10th through 12th grader interested in taking the ASVAB on Friday, February 12, 2021 should email Ms. Poff at poffmo@pcsb.org to sign up.

Congratulations to our academic team.  They remain undefeated this season!

Pinellas County Schools will offer two sessions of Drivers Education this summer at nine high schools.  Online registration is February 22 through February 28, 2021.  For specific information on the sites and dates of the classes go to pcsb.org/driversed.

Congratulations to our Girls’ soccer team.  They play on in district competition here at 7 on Monday night against Manatee. On Tuesday we have boys’ basketball at home in district tournament play against Pinellas at 7 pm. The Largo pre-season tournament runs Tuesday and Thursday with games at 4:30 and 7:30pm.  Paper tickets only for those games so get here before they sell out. Please look to our website for district advancements.

Black History Month Week 1

In celebration of Black History Month, we will be sharing some of the stories of the great black Americans in US history.

Benjamin Banneker, Mathematician and Astronomer, was born November 9, 1731.

What do you see when you look at the stars? Benjamin Banneker saw astronomical patterns from which he could make calculations and predictions. Largely self-taught, Banneker was one of the first African Americans to gain distinction in science. His significant accomplishments include the successful prediction of a solar eclipse, publishing his own almanac, and the surveying of Washington, D.C. Mary Church Terrell was a well-known African American activist and one of the first African-American women to earn a college degree. She championed racial equality and women's suffrage in the late 19th and early 20th century. An Oberlin College graduate, Terrell was part of the rising black middle and upper class who used their position to fight racial discrimination.

Executive Internship Program for the 2021-2022 School Year

 

High school juniors can apply now for the Executive Internship Program for the 2021-2022 school year. The application period is open through March 6.

The EIP gives high school students opportunities to gain experience and expertise in career fields that interest them.

Students are coached and mentored academically and experientially to develop skills that promote self-directed learning, self-awareness, goal setting, creative problem solving and cross-cultural sensitivity.

"EIP is not only dedicated to student growth and success, but also to preparing students to face the future with poise and self-confidence,” said program coordinator Dr. Mary C. Black. “I am proud to coordinate this exceptional learning experience."

Flag Football Practice is coming:

Flag football practice begins next Monday, February 8. More girls are needed for both JV and Varsity. If you’re interested and haven’t picked up your paperwork packet, hurry hurry hurry. Practice is quickly approaching and you don’t want to miss out. Paperwork must be turned in BEFORE you can participate, NOT on the day you want to participate. It still needs to be checked and approved by admin.

Octagon Club Canned Drive Continues:

This is the 2nd week of our canned food drive. Here are some results so far: Ms. Ware's 1st period is in 1st place so far with over 400 items collected. Far behind are Mr. Kaplan's 1st period in 2nd place and Ms. Schuck in 3rd. Items will be collected all this week Bring them to your 1st period class. The team in 1st place will win a donut breakfast courtesy of the Octagon Club.

Summer Driver Education Registration

 

The Drivers Ed Summer program information is now available (see attached). This is a great opportunity for students that want to take Drivers Ed but do not want to take the course for credit, i.e. potentially negatively affecting your weighted GPA. Registration opens February 22nd and fills up almost immediately so if this is something that interests you, make sure to mark your calendar!

Pre-College programs, like this one, are a great way to become acquainted with the University as well as boost your resume. College Board is hosting our first-ever series of free virtual college fairs called BigFuture™ Days. Encourage your teen to sign up for a chance to connect directly with college admissions representatives and current college students. They'll have a chance to explore colleges in a way that's not overwhelming, ask questions about topics they want to learn about, and take action on key college planning steps.

When your teen registers for BigFuture Days, they'll be asked to provide a parent/guardian email address. If you'd like to attend as well, you'll receive an email with a separate login to attend the event. Make sure your teen includes your email address at registration.
